Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium – Buenos Aires
Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium is the star of the Olympic Park of the City of Buenos Aires.
The Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium in Buenos Aires allows the roof central sector to be opened, so Argentina has the first stadium with retractable roof in Latin America.
Structure composition
The Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium super structure is composed of two parallel arches with a span of 190 meters and a key height of 43 meters, separated by 30 meters. The arches support the roof through twelve pendulums and act as a rail beam for the mobile sectors of the roof.
Fixed sectors of the roof structure are made up of six segmented areas on each side with a 2.50 meter high spatial grid, which are hanging from the two arches and leaned on a perimeter ring of precast beams and columns.
The roof is a partially retractable steel structure allowing central sector to be opened according to the requirements of each event and weather conditions so the two moving sectors can be opened in six minutes.
Historical review
The former Parque Roca stadium was used for the first time for a Davis Cup round in February 2006, although on that occasion removable tubular stands were used. Then construction of the precast concrete structure began and it was inaugurated in September 2006, but without the roof. The following year, the Buenos Aires Legislature baptized it “Mary Terán de Weiss”, in homage to the first Argentine tennis player.
The work to build the stadium roof suffered a series of delays that included a review of the project and a strength study of the arches that were already erect.
Opening
But finally, the roof of the Mary Terán de Weiss stadium has been completed to host sports practices and host events of all kinds in the city of Buenos Aires.
It has a capacity for 15 thousand spectators, the largest closed arena in the country, surpassing the Orfeo de Córdoba, the Direct TV Arena in Tortuguitas and Luna Park, so it is the only one in Latin America with retractable coverage.
Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium Engineering Project
The scope of of works of the steel detailing project was the spatial reticulation (stereo structure) of the fixed and mobile roofs with a total weight of 535tn.
Developing time of the project was 15 months, taking the first 4 months for design of typical connections for nodes and then, in the following months, the nodal connectioning for the whole structure and the creation of workshop & assembly drawings were made.
The manufacture of the structure was carried out by several metallurgical workshops.
The assembly was planned to be done in 14 pieces made up of 2 arches and 12 roof sectors (segments).
